What is a lithium battery BMS? Why do we need a BMS lithium battery management system? When it comes to lithium batteries, it is often associated with terms such as lithium battery protection panels and lithium battery management systems. As is well known, the BMS battery management system mainly appears in lithium batteries, and lead-acid batteries generally do not have this management system. Lithium batteries require an additional BMS battery management system to protect the battery cells compared to lead-acid batteries.

What is a lithium battery BMS?

The BMS battery management system is the link between the battery and the user, mainly targeting the secondary battery. Its function is to improve the utilization rate of the battery, prevent overcharging and discharging, increase the service life of the battery, and monitor the status of the battery. Simply put, it is an operating system for managing, manipulating, and using lithium battery packs.

The BMS industry belongs to the midstream of the power lithium battery industry chain. The BMS industry chain includes four links: upstream and midstream raw materials, BMS modules, BMS finished products, and downstream applications.

BMS refers to it as the "brain" of the power battery operating system, which is like the brain of a lithium battery. It sends and receives information from the battery and each external port, deeply analyzes and processes the information, and sends out work commands. Considering its crucial impact on new energy vehicles, the BMS industry continues to attract a large number of lithium battery manufacturers to join.

Why do we need a BMS lithium battery management system?

Lithium batteries are widely used in remote monitoring instruments for long-term standby due to their high working voltage, small size, light weight, high energy density, no memory effect, no pollution, small self discharge, and long cycle life. However, lithium batteries also have some inherent shortcomings, which can be summarized as the following two aspects:

(1) Security

Lithium ion batteries have poor safety and defects such as explosions. Especially for lithium-ion batteries with lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode material, they cannot discharge under high currents and have poor safety. In addition, almost all lithium-ion batteries can cause some damage to the battery due to overcharging or discharging.

Lithium ion batteries are also sensitive to temperature: if used at a high temperature, it may cause electrolyte decomposition, combustion, and even explosion; If the temperature is too low, the performance of lithium-ion batteries will significantly deteriorate, affecting the normal use of the equipment.

Due to limitations in the manufacturing process of lithium batteries, the internal resistance and capacity of each battery may vary. When multiple lithium batteries are used in series, the charging and discharging rates of each battery are inconsistent, resulting in low battery capacity utilization. In view of this, a special protection system is needed in the actual use of lithium-ion batteries to monitor their health status and manage their use.

(2) Maintainability

At low temperatures, capacity degradation and power cannot be accurately predicted, which reduces the maintainability of the equipment. Instruments that are online for a long time need to be replaced regularly, while remote monitoring equipment works in scattered locations with long distances between each location, so the workload and cost of replacing batteries are high.

In order to reduce maintenance workload and lower maintenance costs, the lithium battery management system should have an accurate power state estimation function, accurately grasp the power state of the lithium battery, and carry out battery replacement work more targeted. At the same time, the lithium battery management system should have lower power consumption to reduce maintenance frequency and extend battery life. Therefore, the reasonable design of a lithium battery management system is of great significance for the maintenance of remote monitoring instruments for long-term continuous power supply.
